Gilles Peterson brings the heartbeat of Havana’s music underground to Brixton for one special night only. Celebrating the latest instalment in his Havana Cultura album series, Gilles imports an all-star Cuban live band to inject some authentic Latin flavour and raw Cuban rhythms and recruits none other than Masters At Work legend Louie Vega to headline the DJ bill, playing a special Nuyorican Soul set not heard in the UK for many years!

Continuing his longstanding love affair with Cuba and its musical melting pot, globetrotting DJ/broadcaster Gilles Peterson is back with a new chapter in his Havana Cultura album series – producing an original studio album and lovingly curating a compilation of new Cuban talent.

Having spent the last three years travelling regularly to Havana I've understandably become more attached to this fascinating, almost otherworldly city. I'm also slowly getting to grips with the relationship music has here with the spirits and its people... the drum goes deep. To have Louie Vega joining me on this special night brings it full circle for me, linking the Nu Yorican Soul days to the very latest sounds out of Cuba.

Welcoming a string of guest musicians, vocalists and rappers to Abdala Studios, Havana, Gilles orchestrated the glorious sound clashes that populate the latest chapter in this landmark series, highlighting a clutch of artists innovating in the spaces between jazz, soul, traditional Cuban rhythms, reggaeton and hip-hop. The so-called “Havana Cultura Band” will bring the essence of those exciting, anything-goes recording sessions to London’s newly refurbished Electric Brixton… the full rainbow spectrum from freeform rumba styles to frenetic, danceable piano workouts via hip-hop’s golden age and classic soul. The internationally acclaimed pianist Roberto Carcassés heads up an all-star cast featuring soul diva Danay Suarez and Edrey from hype rap outfit Ogguere, plus Alexey (El Tipo Este)from Obsesion and Cuban diva Osdalgia… Gilles P, as creative head of the project, will of course be jumping up on the turntables for a DJ set too, ably supported by co-producer and close confidante – the very talented Simbad.

This summer, five mostly young online companies are setting themselves apart from all others in the music business. Each represents a different segment of the industry, but together they exemplify the entrepreneurship and innovation that is leading the music industry into the new decade. Get to know them here:

BANDCAMP
What they do:
Bandcamp has quietly created a best-in-class product as MySpace has failed to improve what it offers artists. Its proposition is simple: Allow artists to create pages where they can stream, give away and sell music and other items. From allowing fans to set their own price to giving away downloads in exchange for an email address, Bandcamp allows for some of today’s more popular digital music marketing tactics. Labels can also use it to showcase and sell a number of albums. And as other sites cater to social marketing needs, Bandcamp leaves that to other companies and focuses on doing just a few things very well.
Why they’re hot now:
More than anything, the Bandcamp sites are incredibly functional – empowering the direct-to-fan relationship. Artists have made over $1 million in sales in 2010, Bandcamp tells Billboard, and the company just had one of its artists, Zoe Keating, debut at #7 on Billboard’s classical chart with sales only from her Bandcamp page. www.bandcamp.com.

RDIO
What they do:
Currently in private beta, new social music service Rdio is full of potential. Its social elements make it stand out from its peers and improves upon getting recommendations via Twitter, Facebook or email. Rdio’s pricing is today’s standard: $5 for computer-only streaming and $10 for access through mobile apps. Once it improves its thin catalog, Rdio will have a product that will rival and perhaps exceed the late Lala.
Why they’re hot now:
Rdio will appeal to fans of cloud-based music services who want to follow what their social network is playing. With MOG, Rhapsody and Napster already in the space, and music lockers starting to take off, Rdio is well-positioned to compete in an increasingly hot market.

SONICBIDS
What they do:
Sonicbids is not a new company. Founded in 2001, it was the first online service to allow promoters to find and book artists over the Internet. Last year, according to the Sonicbids website, over 71,000 gigs were booked using the service and 210,000 independent artists use the service.
Why they’re hot now:
Last week, the company announced the hire of two new execs. Martin Kelleher, the new CFO and COO, is a former Monster.com CFO. Nitzan Achsaf, Sonicbids' new VP of product, is a former product manager at Yahoo. In mid-June, Sonicbids announced it had acquired ArtistData, a service that allows artists to update information on all their social networks from a single dashboard. In a nutshell, Sonicbids has improved its product, added users and strengthened its advantage over market newcomers.

SOUNDCLOUD
What they do:
This is sharing made simple. SoundCloud gives artists an easy way to send and receive audio files, embed audio tracks for people to hear and allow others to remix their works. Its music streaming widget is seen in music blogs across the Web. Underlying everything is a social network that allows users to track, communicate and collaborate with others.
Why they’re hot now:
SoundCloud landed about $3.3 million in funding in late 2009. Since then it has solidified its position as a leader in its category. The service is ubiquitous among dance/electronic artists and is starting to become more prominent among rock bands. The company tells Billboard it has grown from 100,000 users to over 1.2 million in the last 12 months and now has 70 applications built on top of its platform. www.soundcloud.com.

TICKETFLY
What they do:
The ticketing company, founded by former Ticketweb executives, is a leader in the growing online ticketing space and is well-positioned to benefit from backlash against the Ticketmaster-Live Nation merger. The company counts among its clients the 9:30 Club in Washington D.C., Maxwell’s in Hoboken and the Knitting Factory venues around the country.
Why they’re hot now:
In May the company announced it had raised $3 million in funding from High Peaks Venture Partners and handful of other investors. In late June, Ticketfly acquired Gigbot, a move that improves the functionality of its platform and adds to its roster of clients.

The history of Jazz, from Funk to Fusion to Acid, will be brought firmly into the fore during this year’s BASS Festival
(British Arts and Street Sounds).

The figurehead of the UK Acid Jazz scene, Snowboy, will be master of ceremonies on Sunday 13^th June at the new MAC and launch his new book.
Audience members will be able to put their questions to Snowboy about the scene and he will be signing copies of his acclaimed new book

‘From Jazz Funk & Fusion to Acid jazz: The History Of The UK Jazz Dance Scene’.

This book has taken over 15 years of research and interviews span the whole of the jazz/funk scene from Newcastle to Plymouth

A free jazz dance workshop will kick off the proceedings in the afternoon and participants will be able to learn some extra special moves ready for the evening when Mark ‘Snowboy’ Cotgrove’s will open his record collection and takes to the turntables.

Dick Jewell’s film "The Jazz Room" will also be screened for only the third time in the UK

"The Jazz Room", shot on Super 8 and completed in 1987, was about the development of jazz dance at The Electric Ballroom, Camden. At the start of each night 'the film so far’ was projected above the dance floor, before continuing to shoot more material to incorporate into the film. This created an interaction between the dancers and the film that informed the development of the dance style. It premiered in 1986 at The Leicester Super 8 Film Festival and has more recently screened in 2005 within assume vivid astro focus featuring Dick Jewell at Tate Gallery Liverpool, Cargo in 2009 as part of Drum Festival's 'Beyond The Ballroom and at Kunsthalle Zurich in October 2009.

United Vibrations are charting new waters in the ocean of British Music.

Inspired by a wealth of different sources, ranging from Drum ‘n’ Bass and Hip-Hop to rock and afro-beat. They are re-establishing the ‘Live’ element to “Black”, “Urban” music.

Inspired by the Rock and Funk pioneers of the 70’s they are forging a new direction for Live music coming out of London. As comfortable in a squat rave as in Ronnie Scotts, these guys are obliterating the established boundaries between, Jazz, Rock and Dance music, forming their own brand of hi-tempo dance music. They call their music 12tone.. A play on words, combining the already established terms of 2-tone (80’s fusion of Jamaican and British music to form ska), and 12-tone (type of a-tonal composition formed by Arnold Schoenberg). The band consists of sax, trombone, bass and drums, with each member contributing to vocals in typical chant/singing style reminiscent of the large funk and soul ensembles of the 70’s.

All profits from the sale of this single are going to a Community Land Trust to build a self-sufficient, carbon neutral housing co-operative in London.

New, unreleased and remixed tracks from the cosmic space producer Nick Woodmansey aka Emanative. All tracks are taken from the new album 'Time', released on CD/Download in June 2010. After the success of the Time album, a series of remixes of some of those tracks and a handful of fresh tracks have been written and created and 6 of them will appear on a forthcoming limited 12 inch vinyl release, courtesy of Adela Street. Kay Suzuki, Jazz Chronicles and Soundspecies provide the alternative versions alongside new mixes and tracks from Emanative himself.

I have so many people to thank for all the personal and professional support they have given me over the years, but I shall do that personally in time. But I want to thank everyone who has bought a song, paid an entrance fee, had a dance or just come up and spoke to me about life, music, the world or whatever. You have given me a dream-like blessed existence for many years. If I have inspired anyone, then I am a happy man. You all have certainly inspired me, and I want to use those years of travelling and sharing to good effect, not this anger and confusion I feel towards it all now. I need to find meaning to the next phase of my life. So I bid you all farewell. I am just too sensitive to keep up the façade of something that doesn’t feel right. I knew it would come someday, maybe some of you that knew me saw it too. I have so much love and respect for my peers and teachers that are carrying on with the struggle, and want the next generation to achieve the best they can for themselves and their art. I am just not a lifer. I’ve traded up, and I’m out.I’ll leave you all with this. Life isn’t the X-Factor. No one has a God given right to his or her dream or ambitions coming true. I have worked hard and had some great luck. I followed some opportunities, squandered others. I have no regrets, other than not stopping when I knew I should have done this time last year. On Thursday 19th of November Red Bull Music Academy will be joining forces, once again, with Karen P’s Broad Casting to bring you a special London Jazz Festival line-up.

Keeping the left-field alive within this year’s London Jazz Festival, November’s Broad Casting centres on 2 of Karen P’s favourite contemporary musical innovators, LA’s Carlos Nino (who as well as being one half of electronic legends Ammon Contact directs the incredible Sun-Ra inspired Build an Ark along with Miguel Atwood-Ferguson) and Holy Roller Productions’ IG Culture (who has been pushing the boundaries of British soul, hip-hop, jazz and dance music for more than 2 decades).

Carlos Nino: “I first played Cargo with Daedelus in 2004, then later with Dwight Trible & The Life Force Trio in 2005, but haven’t had Build an Ark take that stage yet! As I’m most interested in nights that are conceptually focused, BROAD CASTING is perfect! We get to play music from our new record, while the legendary IG Culture, (who by the way, has been a very encouraging and supportive comrade along the way,) will be sampling us, for original tracks he’ll make on the spot, to be premiered in his DJ set later that night! It’s gonna be wonderful!”

IG’s Zen Badizm Workshop project will open up proceedings, performing music including some tracks from his incredible Japan only LP (also called Zen Badizm), released earlier this year on Freedom School records. Channeling the conscious energy of jazz labels like Strata East and Tribe, the heart-melting soul of Eddie Kendricks, and the spirituality of Ra through the cutting edge musicianship of IG and collaborators including Bilal, CoreyWilkes, Pino Palladino and Heidi Vogel. The line-up for tonight’s incarnation of Zen Badizm is not yet confirmed but will include Kaidi Tatham, Akwesi Mensah, Eric Appapoulay, and Red Bull Music Academy past-participant Fatima.

Whilst Zen Badizm might channel the inspiration of Tribe Records and their spiritual-jazz contemporaries, Build an Ark actually bring Tribe’s founder, trombonist Phil Ranelin centre-stage along with vocalist and composer Dwight Trible – who has performed with Harry Belafonte, Bobby Hutcherson and notably, Pharoah Sanders. Coming to us courtesy of the amazing Kindred Spirits label in Holland, Build an Ark will fill Cargo with their uplifting and message-driven freedom jazz sound, performing tracks from their new album LOVE Part 1, as well as favourites from their previous albums. Build an Ark are duty-bound to awaken a higher consciousness within their audience as anyone who has caught them live before will testify. And you can bet your bottom dollar they’ll do the very same at Broad Casting.

IG Culture will then return to the stage with a very special and unique DJ set. Having spent the afternoon sampling, looping and re-working Build an Ark’s rehearsal and sound-check, IG will create unique and exclusive tracks to perform for the Broad Casting audience. Alongside these fresher than fresh Build an Ark dubs, will be dropping the bombs and specials as he has always been known to do. This will no doubt be a truly unique experiment to round off the evening in unique Broad Casting style and will be accompanied by jazz dancers such as Gary Nurse from legends of the underground.

IG Culture: "This is the kind of challenge that really gets me going. I'm feeling what Build an Ark do already - the way the project revives that classic underground spiritual jazz sound and attitude, and brings it bang up to date for the modern age. You can hear that Carlos is driven by nothing but his passion for the music..."

Some of the greatest musicians in the UK's soul/jazz scene line up together for a rare and exclusive performance at The Southbank Centre. The Wise Children invite viewers to witness the birth of ideas and guide them through the creative process from the jam session to the fine-tuning of the production: now's the chance to catch this live.
The band cook up a fresh, broad, groove-based blend of black music genres from jazz to hip-hop, soul to funk, reggae to afro-beat, plus more in between.
These are the musicians behind all the major players in the UK scene.
The line-up includes James Yarde (keyboards, musical direction and production), Cassell The Beatmaker (drums), Pino Palladino - bass player for The Who. He also records with IG Culture when he's not on tour with one of the world best ever bands, Eric Appapoulay (guitar), Dave Okumu an astounding electric guitarist having worked with Mark De Clive Lowe, Bugz in The Attic and his own band Jade Fox, Julian Siegel (saxes), Harry Brown (trombone) and Mark Crown (trumpet). Amongst the special guests are Michelle Escoffery, Zena Edwards, Marcina Arnold, Kevin Mark Trail and Rachael Bell. Spinning the sounds will be DJs Charlie Dark, Bopstar, and Kay Suzuki.

A superb record shop for House Music, Techno and Disco. Manu owns the shop and as well as being a great DJ he's a really cool guy with an amazing knowledge of modern dance music. There's a vast selection of music to choose from old and new in a spacious shop with comfortable sofas and a drinks machine.

Betino has more than 5,000 brand new and older records in store including a fantastic selection of second hand product in the back. Believe me there are some serious nuggets here! Highly respected in Paris, Betino worked for Karamel for over 20 years so has frontline worldwide distribution experience. He is especially knowledgeable with regards to 70's, 80's and 90's releases. He amazes me sometimes with what he knows and how much its worth. This shop is well worth a visit and is always buzzing with local DJ's, Producers and Musicians.
As well as shipments arriving every few days from the UK, USA and Germany the shop holds some great T Shirts, Magazines and theres a nice bar next door. If your lucky you will end up outside with Betino and an Espresso !
